Mixed Other

  • PHOTO BOOK CAFE 4 Leonard Circus London, England, EC2A 4DQ United Kingdom (map)

Mixed Other is a photography exhibition exploring identity and otherness, focusing on how individuals of mixed heritage navigate and preserve their cultural influences. It asks challenging questions: What happens when the fusion of cultures becomes isolating? How do we reconcile parts of ourselves that feel disconnected?

This photography exhibition holds deep personal significance for the half-Palestinian, half-Guyanese South London-based creative behind it. Over the past 76 years, the erasure of her Palestinian heritage has amplified the importance of preserving and understanding cultural identity. This project is not just a study of others' experiences but a poignant reflection of her own journey.

Identity is a nuanced experience for everyone, but it becomes even more complex when half of one's existence is not deemed worthy of life, respect, and safety. This exhibition delves into these intricate layers of selfhood, highlighting the diverse challenges faced by individuals of mixed heritage.

Through intimate portraits and personal stories, this initial showcase features a select group of subjects, revealing the influences that shape their identities. The work seeks to honor the resilience and richness of these identities, ensuring they are seen, respected, and remembered.

As a long-form project, "Mixed Other" delves into the complexities of identity, examining what it means to be who we are and the diverse challenges faced by individuals shaped by multiple cultural and societal influences. A short film, set to release in 2025, will provide an intimate look at the lives of a handful of subjects, further exploring themes of the self, embodiment, identity and belonging.

Whilst this is a free event, donations can be made a check out where proceeds will be going directly to both Palestine and Lebanon.
