With his camera serving as an extension of himself, a kind of appendage used to cope, navigate and interpret his perspective of the world, Bojan Nikolic embraces chance, risk, desire and mistakes in his work, striving to balance the dichotomy of being unconscious yet present in the active creative process.
Born in Sarajevo, in the former Yugoslavia, he relocated with his family to London at the age of 8, just before the outbreak of the devastating Yugoslav wars of the 1990s. The immigrant experience has informed his artistic and philosophical views, imbuing him with the perspective of an observer of a society and culture he stands just outside of.
This perspective legitimises the practice of photography, blending personal experience with the rich texture of the present moment. His method exposes the fundamental paradoxes in documentary photography, treating the world as a canvas to be reshaped and reimagined freely. For him, the street is a realm of tension and solitude to uncover the raw essence of life. Through the work, he delves into the nuanced layers of reality, creating visual narratives that are both deeply personal and universally resonant.
This project’s title reflects how Bojan employs the camera as just a tool to connect and interact with the world. “Raw Data” on its own is not useful; it requires additional processing to become meaningful information. Similarly, he captures fragments of his experiences and weaves them into a narrative of perception. These photo fragments are transformed into a visual exploration of memory, perception and identity.
